How to Clean a Front Loading Washing Machine

Maybe you’re noticing a foul odor coming from your washing machine or perhaps your clothes are no longer coming out as clean as you’d hoped. Either way, knowing how to clean a front loading washing machine will likely be the solution to your problems.

Washing machines need to be properly cleaned at least once a month, or more often if frequently used or subject to a humid climate.

So, before you run out to the shops and buy a strongly scented detergent to mask your washing machine’s smell, consider your problem may stem from your failure to keep on top of the required cleaning.

Here is our tried and tested, ultimate guide to cleaning a front-loading washing machine:

Things you’ll need to clean your washing machine

Soft cloth/sponge

¼ cup of baking soda

¼ cup of water

2 cups of white vinegar

All-purpose cleaning spray

Step one: clean the exterior

Use an all-purpose cleaning spray to wipe down all the sides and crevices of your washing machine’s exterior. Once you’re happy that there’s no grime coating your machine, open up the door and containers so that you can clear the corners and cracks of dust and mold.

Step two: run an empty wash cycle

Mix ¼ cup of baking soda with the ¼ cup of water and pour the mixture into the detergent compartment of the dispenser drawer. Then, open up the washing machine’s door an pour in two cups of white vinegar.

The combination of baking soda and vinegar will naturally break up mineral deposits and any mold growth.

Set your washer to a normal load at the hottest water setting and sit back and let the washing machine do the hard work for you.

Step three: clean the door and drum

The wash should have left the inside of your machine shiny and odorless, but your work isn’t finished yet. To finish off your complete clean, you need to clean the door.

Use a cloth and white vinegar to run around the door gasket. Dirt and residue can easily get trapped in the gasket so it’s important to give this a regular wipe down.

And that’s it! Your washing machine is now sparkling clean and ready to do a load of laundry.

Other helpful cleaning tips:

  • Keep the washing machine door open after use. This allows the leftover moisture to evaporate, minimizing the chance for mildew to grow on the rubber seal.
  • Use the correct amount of detergent and softener. Excess wash products can fester behind the rubber door seal.
